Head-to-head comparisons

Every comparison ends with a winner — by buyer profile, not by brand. Affiliated products are disclosed on-page and never inherit the verdict.

What a comparison here has to earn

A head-to-head is only honest when both devices are trying to solve the same problem. Most of the pairings a reader could imagine across our shelf would be theatre: two USB evaporative coolers of similar price and identical technology, set side by side, tell you nothing you could act on.

So every comparison starts with the category question and only then reaches the numbers. Where one side is a compressor and the other is evaporative, we say so in the first paragraph, because that difference outranks every spec that follows: a compressor removes heat from a room and draws 800 to 1,200 W to do it; an evaporative unit cools the stream that reaches you, adds humidity in a closed space, and draws one to two orders of magnitude less.

Where the other comparisons live

Nine reviewed devices would give thirty-six possible pairings, and most of them would be filler. Instead, every one of our nine reviews closes with the nearest alternative from the same shelf, with its score and the reason. Weighing the AerioQ’s wall format against the CoolJet’s desk use takes two sentences there, not a table here.

The buying guides do the other half of the job: they rank whole categories at once, by situation rather than by brand.

More match-ups on the way

New head-to-heads are added as products enter our review shelf. Want one prioritised? Tell us. Meanwhile, the best-of guides rank whole categories at once.
